SAFEST WAY TO POST YOUR CV (Resume).

Job listing posted by: RedSon (Site Moderator) on July 19th, 2007 09:11 PM
Greetings all,

We encourage you to post your CV or resume but we would like to warn you to be aware of a few things beforehand.

First, this website is crawled by web spiders of all sorts, some are bad and are written for the purpose of harvesting personal information to be exploited for illegal spamming and identity theft operations. We would like to warn you to be careful in posting you personal information.

The Jobs forum is the one forum on TSDN where we are lax about removing email addresses, however this is also a dangerous idea simply because of the amount of spam that you are likely to get after giving that information out. However, most recruiters and professional people have spam filters and other ways to manage their email address in the public domain.

Information that is generally safe to post to a public forum:
  • First and last name (however giving out your last name is debatable, I wouldn't)
  • Country of origin and maybe state or province, but not city or town
  • Educational background, but not the names of the schools
  • Dates and types of previous employment (but do not give out the business name)
  • Mission statements
  • Hobbies
  • Contact information like an email address
  • Do not give out your home phone number or home address

Good Example:
Code: ( text )
  1. Joe Public
  2. Maryland, USA
  3. joe at thescripts dot com (email address written out to prevent spamming)
  4.
  5. Mission: To get the best job that I can!
  6.
  7. Work Expirence:
  8.
  9. 2004-Present  Freelance PHP programmer
  10. -  Re-wrote local community bulliten board system
  11. -  Worked on open source project for colleague
  12. -  Wrote forward to popular text book
  13.
  14. 2000-2004 Unemployed while pursuing degree
  15. -  Did a research project
  16. -  Started peer counseling group
  17. -  Voted president of college republicans
  18.
  19. 1999-2000 Dock Worker
  20. -  Drank a lot of beer
  21. -  Shot at seagulls with my sling shot
  22. -  Made fun of other people
  23.
  24. Education:
  25.
  26. 2000-2004 Computer Science Degree GPA: 3.005
  27. -  Internship for major corporation
  28. -  TA for introduction to algorithms class
  29. -  Summer abroad helping to herd cats in southern China

In my sample resume I have provided a good deal of information but did not provide enough specifics for someone to be able to track me down and steal things from me. I also made my email address harder to steal by removing the @ symbol and . symbol.

Hopefully you will now feel more confident posting your information on the forums. And now we will be able to worry less about you perhaps putting yourself in danger by providing too much information!

Sensible advice. I would suggest though that the city or town is quite relevant though. Also, would not a PM be the best way to contact? The poster could use their Scripts 'handle', and interested folks could contact them via PM. They might also indicate a preference for contract or perm work.

All I could think of for now...happy to see this happening though!

Also good suggestions but I am hesitant to endorse someone putting their city or town as many towns are small enough to be able to find out a lot of information about a person based on their name. If I have your first and last name as well as the small town you live in that may be all I need to get the information that I need.

Although perhaps we can both agree that putting the nearest large town to you would be suitable. If you live in Smalltown, NY but you only live 20 miles away from New York, NY then it is quite sensible to put New York as your home town.
