dreamweaver CS3 closes immediatly after opening

Discussion started by: gregerly (Expert) on October 18th, 2007 01:08 AM
Hello,

I appologize as this has no PHP content, but I'm not sure where else to post this. Please feel free to move the post if neccessary.

I'm having an issue with Dreamweaver CS3 and it won't open anymore. I have a legit copy of the CS3 Web Premium running on Vista. I've had no issues until now.

When I click on the Dreamweaver.exe file to run dreamweaver I get the normal green splash img, and I can see the interface building in the background and then everything immediatly dissappears. I don't know if this helps, but on the splash img where is show things like "Loading blah blah..." it always stops on:

"Initializing Extension Data" before everything disappears.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

greg

Re: dreamweaver CS3 closes immediatly after opening
Figured it out. Apparently (get ready for the most ridiculous bug I've ever heard of) if a CSS file is exactly 8192 bytes Dreamweaver won't open. Plain and simple. What were the odds that the css file I was just working on happened to be exactly 8192 bytes? Yup, it was, exactly 8192 bytes (or any increment of that number). I added a bunch of comments to the css file and Dreamweaver opened right up.

So, in case anyone else has this problem, that would be the fix.

That was the weirdest bug.

But thanks for the solution.

DW8 just crashed right in the middle of writing a line of CSS then wouldn't start up again...

It died for me at 8500bytes... and restarted at 8816bytes...

Anywho. Thanks.

Thank goodness you posted this!

I just ran into this problem today, seven months later

I checked the size of the CSS file I was using when DW crashed and, sure enough, 8K! (I didn't check the exact size.)

I added some comments using Notepad, and now DW works!

You'd think Adobe would have fixed something like this by now. I just bought CS3 a couple of months ago.

Thanks!

Nick

Re: dreamweaver CS3 closes immediatly after opening
NEWS FLASH!!!!

It appears the problem isn't just CSS files! It may be the amount of CSS code.

I had this problem and even after all the standard troubleshooting and coming upon this thread (a while ago) I could not takle the problem. The last page I was working on was PHP with CSS in the head tag.

Suddenly it occurred to me that perhaps the CSS code in the head was 8129 bits of data (the file itself is like 25KB), so I add some comments to the CSS and SHAZAM!

DW CS3 on Vista 64 Bit is up and running again.

That bug screams to be fixed.

I had this happen to a file that was just another .asp file I was working with. Turns out the file was saved and used 8,129 kb of disk space and Dreamweaver crashed and wouldn't start up. I added to the file, removed it, but Dreamweaver still crashed on load. I might rebuild the site cache, which stinks but I know it should work.
